National Coast Guard Day was established to honor the U.S. Coast Guard, which was established under the name Revenue Marine in 1790. To this day the Coast Guard is instrumental in keeping peace and patrolling the waters of the American coast. The Coast Guard is a unique branch of the military responsible for an array of maritime duties, from ensuring safe and lawful commerce to performing rescue missions in severe conditions.
