The first United States patent for a waffle iron was issued to Cornelius Swarthout of Troy, New York on August 24, 1869. Now, August 24 annually celebrates National Waffle Day in honor of this anniversary.
Eaten throughout the world, a waffle is a leavened batter or dough that is cooked between two plates that are patterned to give a characteristic size, shape and surface impression. Based on the type of waffle iron used as well as recipe used there are many variations of waffles.
