This National Day was created in 2001 by 43rd United States President, George W. Bush. It honors the nation’s airborne divisions of the Armed Forces, particularly celebrating the accomplishments of Army parachute tradition. The reason August 16 was chosen is because it marks the anniversary of the first official Army parachute jump at Ft. Benning, Georgia in 1940.
