Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni was an Italian sculptor, painter, architect, and poet. Michelangelo is widely regarded as the most famous artist of the Italian Renaissance. He was born on March 6, 1475, in Caprese, Italy to a family of moderate means in the banking business. Michelangelo became an apprentice to a painter before studying in the sculpture gardens of the powerful Medici family. He is most known for his work on the "David" sculpture and for painting the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.
