On this date in 1773, American colonists, frustrated and angry at Britain for imposing “taxation without representation,” dumped 342 chests of tea from the British East India Company into the harbor. The event would come to be known as the Boston Tea Party, and the phrase "no taxation without representation" would be associated with the event and many others culminating in the colonists decision to start the American Revolution.
