August 12th, 2024
In 2002, San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors in California adopted a proclamation, conceived and written by Gary Freiberg, declaring August 12th as Vinyl Record Day in San Luis Obispo County. Since then, the observance has spread elsewhere and has turned into a grassroots movement to preserve the history and authenticity of music on vinyl. Music stores often take part, particularly those who archive or sell vinyl records.
Vinyl records were one of the first widespread methods of sharing recorded music. Even though tapes, CDs and digital music files have eclipsed vinyl today, there are plenty of ways for music stores to promote the history of vinyl records and tap into enthusiasts who still enjoy listening to music on vinyl.
