National Prescription Drug Take Back Day encourages people to properly dispose of expired or unused prescription medications. Not only may prescription medications work less efficiently after their expiration date, they may be unsafe. Furthermore, according to the 2018 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 9.9 million Americans misused controlled prescription drugs. The study shows that a majority of abused prescription drugs were obtained from family and friends, often from the home medicine cabinet.
Health professionals can promote this event and their own businesses by offering a listing of take-back sites where expired or unneeded prescription drugs can be collected, even signing up to be a collection site.
