Handshakes have been practiced since at least the 2nd century B.C. and many researchers believe that the handshake originated in the Western world. Handshakes are a common form of greeting among two people newly introduced.
In the past it was believed handshakes marked a gesture of peace, demonstrated by the fact that the hands held no weapons. Today, a handshake is offered upon meeting or parting. It is an expression of goodwill, gratitude and congratulations. Many people believe that a handshake reveals something about the character of the person who gives it.
National Handshake Day is held on the last Thursday in June each year. Even though people have not been shaking hands over the course of the last year, it remains worthy of celebration and people can do a fist bump as an alternative during coronavirus precautions.
