First Solo Round the World Balloon Flight: Anniversary, 2002

Steve Fossett became the first person to circumnavigate the world nonstop and in a nonmotorized craft. In his “Spirit of Freedom” balloon, Fossett traveled 19,400 miles. He began his odyssey on June 18, 2002, at Northam, Australia, and arrived at his starting longitude (117° east) on July 2. (The first balloon flight around the world was accomplished by a two-man team in 1999.)
