The martini is one of America's most iconic cocktails. It established its name in the 1940s and 1950s when who's who of society could be seen hosting cocktail parties and serving martinis in their familiar triangular shaped glasses. Martini's origins are relatively obscure, but it is rumored that they started out as sweet drinks, and eventually evolved into drier versions. Martinis can be concocted with vodka or gin, but purists stick to the gin — shaken or stirred, it's up to the connoisseur.
