Juneteenth National Independence Day is the commemoration of the abolition of slavery in the United States. It marks the June 19, 1865, announcement of the abolition of slavery in Galvaston, TX. Henceforth, this African American Emancipation day spread across the rest of the country. It is now a unifying event showcasing just how far the country has come. The holiday also has been known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day or Emancipation Day. Many celebrations ensue with time for reflecting and rejoicing on personal freedom.
Juneteenth was renamed Juneteenth National Independence day in June 2021 when it was established as a U.S. Federal Holiday and signed into law by President Joseph Biden. It is the first new federal holiday since the adoption of Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 1983.
