Born on May 18, 1920, Karol Wojtyla of Wadowice, Poland became the 264th pope of the Roman Catholic Church on October 16, 1978 and remained as such for 27 years. He was the first non-Italian pope to be elected in 456 years and the first Polish pope. John Paul II was known to be conservative and traditional, traveling all over the world to bring the message of the Catholic Church, He died at Vatican City on April 2, 2005, and was beatified May 1, 2011.
