Juneteenth is the commemoration of the abolition of slavery in the United States. It dates back as far as the 1890s when it was originally called Jubilee Day. Juneteenth is a combination of "June" and "nineteenth" to mark the June 19, 1865, announcement of the abolition of slavery in Galvaston, TX. While originally celebrated regionally, eventually this African American Emancipation day spread across the rest of the country. By the 21st century, Juneteenth was celebrated in most major cities across the U.S. Activists are tirelessly campaigning for the United States Congress to recognize Juneteenth as a national holiday. Currently it is recognized as a state holiday or special day of observance.
Juneteenth is now a unifying event showcasing just how far the country has come in the celebration of freedom and equality. It often is celebrated with family gatherings and joyful community celebrations. The holiday is also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day. Many local celebrations ensue with time for reflecting and rejoicing on personal freedom.
