Just five days after the end of the Civil War, before the North and South had fully reconciled, President Abraham Lincoln and First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln attended the show Our American Cousin at Ford's Theatre. Shots rang out from inside the playhouse, mayhem broke out and it was discovered that the 16th president of the United States was mortally wounded. Southern sympathizer John Wilkes Booth, an actor himself of whom Lincoln was a fan, assassinated President Lincoln in cold blood.
