The World Health Organization is an agency of the UN founded to coordinate international health systems. It is headquartered at Geneva. Among its achievements is the elimination of smallpox.
When diplomats met to form the United Nations in 1945, one of the things they discussed was setting up a global health organization. WHO's Constitution came into force on April 7,1948 – a date now celebrated every year as World Health Day. 2018 marks the 70th anniversary of the WHO.
