April 6th, 2021

Company: International Olympic Committe
Web site: http://www.olympic.org/athens-1896

The creation of the modern Olympics was inspired by the ancient Olympic Games, which were held in Olympia, Greece, from the 8th century BC to the 4th century AD. The first modern Olympic games were summer events, taking place in Athens in 1896. On April 6, 1896, American James Connolly won the triple jump to become the first Olympic champion in more than 1,500 years. He also finished second in the high jump and third in the long jump.
