Autism affects children in all regions, regardless of gender, race or socioeconomic status. It poses challenges to long-term health care, education, training, and intervention programs, and has a tremendous impact on children, their families, communities and societies. To further educate about autism and the high rates of the condition, the General Assembly designated April 2 to be World Autism Awareness Day on Dec 18, 2007.
