Pretzels are believed to be the world's oldest snack and date back to 610AD in Southern France. Monks baked thin strips of dough into the shape of a child's arms folded in prayer. Pretzels became a popular treat and now are enjoyed sweet and savory.
In 2003, Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell declared April 26 "National Pretzel Day" to acknowledge the importance of the pretzel to the state's history and economy. Pennsylvania produces 80% of America's pretzels.
