Lightning strikes the United States about 25 million times a year. Although most lightning occurs in the summer, people can be struck at any time of year. Lightning kills an average of 49 people in the United States each year, and hundreds more are severely injured.
"When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors!" The NOAA's National Weather Service hosts this annual lightening safety campaign in order to educate people about the danger of lightening and to reduce the number of deaths cause by lightening each year. The national weather service offers tool kits, online information, expert help and more.
