First Corvette is Assembled: Anniversary, 1953

Chevrolet plant workers in Flint, Michigan hand assembled the first Corvette on this day in 1953. The vehicle featured a Polo White exterior and red interior. The car opened from the inside with no visible outside handles. The American sports car was designed to compete with some European roadsters, including Jaguars and Ferraris, but at a more affordable price. The first Corvette retailed for $3,490.
