Helen Adams Keller was born on June 27, 1880 in Tuscumbia, Alabama. In 1882, she fell ill and was struck blind, deaf and mute. Beginning in 1887, Keller's new and innovative teacher Ann Sullivan, helped her make tremendous progress with her ability to communicate, and Keller went on to college, graduating in 1904. In 1920, Keller helped found the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). During her lifetime, she received many honors in recognition of her accomplishments. Here are some other facts about Hellen Keller:

• She worked the vaudeville circuit as the "Eighth Wonder of the World."

• She was the first person with deafness and blindness to earn a college degree.

• She was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize in 1953.

• She fell in love and almost eloped, but her parents thought a woman with disabilities shouldn't marry.
