National Doughnut Day is a special day celebrated in the U.S.on the first Friday of June each year. The event was created by The Salvation Army in 1938 to honor those of their members who served doughnuts to soldiers during World War I. On National Doughnut Day, doughnut stores and bakeries often give customers free doughnuts.
According to the "Oxford Companion to American Food and Drink," doughnuts are deep-fried cakes with a long European history and roots in Middle Eastern cuisine. They were introduced to America by the Dutch as oliekoecken (oil cakes or fried cakes).
