Earth Day, observed annually on April 22, is one of the largest observances in the world — with more than a billion people globally taking part. Earth Day is designed to promote ecology, encourage respect for life on earth, and highlight concern over pollution of the soil, air, and water.
The idea for a national day to focus on the environment came to Earth Day founder Gaylord Nelson, who was then a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin. Nelson witnessed the devastation of the 1969 massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California. By April 22,1970, 20 million Americans took to the streets, parks, and auditoriums to demonstrate for the first time for a healthy, sustainable environment in massive coast-to-coast rallies. Earth Day has been a prominent celebration of the environment and conservation ever since. The year 2020 is the 50th anniversary of the first Earth Day, and the theme for this year's event is "Climate Action."

Concern over protecting the environment has not wavered through the years. In fact, it seems more than ever people are interested in doing their part to be eco-friendly on Earth Day and throughout the year. This is a great opportunity to approach like-minded retailers and service providers to tie into Earth Day events -- or general "Think Green" type promotions.
