Doughnuts didn't always have holes in their centers. In fact, it was customary to make solid doughnuts. But 16-year-old Hanson Gregory came up with the ring-shaped doughnut while working on a lime-trading ship. Maybe he was looking at the ships ring lifebuoy while coming up with the concept. By popping a hole in the center, it removes the risk of the doughnut being over- or under-cooked in the middle.
The anniversary of the ringed doughnut is certainly worth celebrating and promoting. This is a chance for doughnut shops, diners, bakeries, and other purveyors of doughnuts to have an opportunity to shine.
