Sea Serpent Day was established to commemorate the tales sailors would share about creatures from the depths of the ocean. On one particular day in August 1848, several men aboard the HMS Daedalus looked out upon the South Atlantic and spied a 60-foot-long creature bearing a peculiar maned head above the ocean water. Other such tales have persisted throughout history and until today.
