The first U.S. branch of the Young Men's Christian Association opened in Boston, Mass in 1851. It was modeled on an organization begun in London in 1844. The goal of the YMCA continues to be strengthening communities through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. YMCA chapters now include both young men and women and often are integral building blocks of communities.
