Pretzels are believed to be the world's oldest snack and date back to 610 AD in Southern France. Historical references state monks baked thin strips of dough into the shape of a child's arms folded in prayer. Pretzels became a popular treat among the faithful and then expanded to be eaten by many. Now pretzels are enjoyed the world-over, and come in standard, sweet and savory varieties.
In 2003, Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell declared April 26 "National Pretzel Day" to acknowledge the importance of the pretzel to the state's history and economy. Pennsylvania produces 80% of America's pretzels.
