First Public School in America: Anniversary, 1635

The Boston Latin School was the first school to be established in what would go on to become the United States. It opened in April 1635 in Boston, Mass. This boys-only public secondary school was led by schoolmaster Philemon Pormont, a Puritan settler. The Boston Latin School was strictly for college preparation.
