Garlic is a flavorful component to cooking, as well as as a substance purported to have a wide array of medicinal purposes, such as helping to control blood pressure and cholesterol. Garlic is a member of the lily family, and is a close cousin to onions, leeks and shallots. Garlic is used in the traditional cuisine of many nations, but it may be most closely tied to Mediterranean cooking.
