National One Cent Day gives people the opportunity to celebrate the U.S. penny, also known as a one-cent piece. While pennies don't buy much these days, they still are in circulation, and have been since 1787 when they were first produced by a private mint until the National Mint was created in 1792. Interestingly, the first penny was invented by Benjamin Franklin, also known as the Franklin coin. The coin had words 'Mind Your Business' on one side, and the reverse side featured words 'We Are One.'
