This has been a traditional observance since 1933 to honor America's hardworking physicians. It marks the anniversary of when Dr. Crawford W. Long became the first acclaimed physician to use ether as an anesthetic agent during surgery. People don a red carnation on this day to signify honor and respect to doctors.
