On March 29, 1848 a massive assemblage of ice blocks formed upstream of Niagara Falls. By the time midnight arrived, water had stopped over the flow of all three falls. The ice jam held until April 1, when the waters of Lake Erie managed to push through the blockage and get the falls flowing freely again. This was the only time the entire falls was affected by a blockage.
