Read Across America Day is a national reading campaign that advocates that all children read a book so they can become lifelong readers. Each year the event is celebrated on or near the birthday of Theodore (Dr. Seuss) Geisel. Books by Dr. Seuss are often the first enjoyed by early readers. Reading helps develop and reinforce vocabulary, and is needed all throughout life and in every subject. Research has shown that children who are motivated and spend more time reading do better in school. People who read frequently also can keep their minds sharp at any age.

Even though Read Across America Day is celebrated each March, the National Education Association provides may resources so children and adults can enjoy reading every day of the year. Fun events unfold on and around Read Across America Day. Schools often invite guest readers to come into classrooms, students may dress up as favorite Dr. Seuss characters and read his stories, and this year educators, supporters and avid readers are encouraged to take a picture with a favorite book and post the "shelfie" on social media. Remember to include the hashtag #ReadAcrossAmerica.

Another great idea for Read Across America Day is to pick up a newspaper and go through all of the articles, current events and other components that make newspapers invaluable resources.
