Cupcakes came to be in the 18th century. Back then the term "cupcake" was used more as a unit of measurement than actually referring to the size of the dessert — much in the way pound cake began. Eventually cupcakes evolved to be the diminutive treat known and loved today. It is by far one of the common foods served at birthday parties and other events.
