On Dec 16, 1992, the General Assembly proclaimed this observance for the first Saturday of July 1995 (Resolution 47/60). On Dec 23, 1994, recognizing that cooperatives were becoming an indispensable factor of economic and social development, the Assembly invited governments, international organizations, specialized agencies and national and international cooperative organizations to observe this day annually.
