August was first declared National Children's Vision & Learning Month in 1995. The goal of this national observance is to help educate parents and educators about the critical link between vision and learning. Since then, cities and states have continued to generate awareness by making yearly proclamations. School vision screenings often only test for visual acuity. In reality, the vision skills needed for successful reading and learning are much more complex. A child who can see 20/20 can still have a vision problem. A comprehensive vision exam with a developmental optometrist is the first step in uncovering the link between a child's vision and any learning problems they may be struggling with unnecessarily.
August is home to Children's Eye Health and Safety Month as well as National Children's Vision & Learning Month. It is the perfect opportunity for eye doctors to spread the word on the importance of routine examinations and treating eye conditions early on to preserve vision.
