Golf great Walter Hagen and some 30 other pro golfers met and formed the Professional Golfers' Association of America and also developed the idea for a national championship. The first PGA Championship, which was played Apr 10, 1916, took place at the Siwanoy course in Bronxville, NY. The winner was British golfer Jim Barnes, who also won the second competition — not held until 1919 because of WWI. In 1921 Walter Hagen became the first American to win, a feat he accomplished four more times.
The founding of the PGA is a pivotal moment in golf history. Highlight the popularity of golf throughout the month of January, urging golfers to begin to prepare for a new season of hitting the links.
