Sharps injuries can occur with needles, syringes, lancets, auto-injectors, connection and infusion sets, wires, and scalpels. The International Sharps Injury Prevention Society (ISIPS) started the month in 2013 as a way to remind healthcare workers, waste management workers, and laboratory staff to practice safe handling and disposal of sharps.
