Reaffirming the universal relevance of the principle of nonviolence, and desiring to secure a culture of peace, tolerance, understanding and nonviolence, on June 15, 2007, the General Assembly declared this day to be observed annually on Oct 2, the anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi's birth.
