This month is dedicated to encouraging safe motorcycle-riding practices. People can learn safe riding practices through state and local motorcycle-safety courses, and continue improving skills through advanced riding courses.
All motorists are reminded to safely "share the road" with motorcycles and to be extra alert to help keep motorcyclists safe. Motorcyclists are reminded to make themselves visible to other motorists. Motorcycles are vehicles with the same rights and privileges as any motor vehicle on the roadway.
Automotive safety, travel and more does not extend exclusively to cars and trucks. It also includes the thousands of motorcycles that are on the roadways. According to the latest data from NHTSA, motorcyclists accounted for 14 percent of all traffic fatalities in 2015 while motorcycles make up just 3 percent of all registered vehicles in the United States. Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month is the key time of year to promote motorcycle safety and awareness.
