During the fist week of January, people are urged to learn more about Folic Acid, an essential B-vitamin that plays a key role in the development of embryos and fetuses while in utero since it is necessary for healthy cell growth. Taking folic acid can prevent upto 70% of some serious birth defects of the brain and spine, called neural tube defects. Folic acid is important before a person even plans to get pregnant as well as after. That's why women starting at age 15 should learn the proper amounts of folic acid they need.
