This has been a traditional observance since 1933 to honor America's hardworking physicians. It marks the anniversary of when Dr. Crawford W. Long became the first acclaimed physician to use ether as an anesthetic agent during surgery. The red carnation is worn on this day, and symbolizes Doctors' Day.
