Black Press Day: Anniversary of the First Black Newspaper, 1827

March 16th, 2021

Samuel Cornish and John Brown Russwurm started the first African-American periodical called Freedom's Journal in 1827. Although they were innovators, throughout the Antebellum South many other publications began to crop up with African Americans at the helm. Eventually, every large city with a significant black population soon had niche publications directed toward this demographic of the population.
