Nearly 20 years after the end of the Vietnam War, the US and Vietnam agreed to resume diplomatic relations. In the early 1990s Vietnam had become one of the fastest-growing economies in Asia after giving up Communist controls and allowing economic reform. Earlier in 1994 President William Clinton had lifted the American embargo that hindered Americans from doing business in Vietnam.
