The Preakness Stakes, the middle jewel in thoroughbred racing’s Triple Crown, was inaugurated in 1873. Annually, it is held the third Saturday in May — two Saturdays after the Kentucky Derby — and followed, three Saturdays later, by the Belmont Stakes.
