A root beer float is a perfect way to cool off after a hot day of having fun in the summer. A float is made by putting scoops of one's choice in ice cream (traditionally vanilla) in a cup, and pouring root beer or another soft drink over the ice cream. The result is a frosty beverage that is cooling and satisfying.
Root beer floats became a traditional part of Americana and could be found at ice cream parlors and malt shops across the country. To give back to the country, on National Root Beer Float Day, A&W collects donations for veterans in exchange for free small root beer floats.
