National Hug & High Five Day was started in 2021 by David Sylvester. Big Dave, as he's affectionately called, has made it a quest to hand out hugs and high fives all over the world. For the past 20 years, in the aftermath of the 9-11 terrorist attacks, Sylvester said he was compelled to dispense goodwill and cheer. Since then he has visited areas affected by other tragedies to show that kindness hasn't vanished. His cause has taken up new meaning in an era of COVID-19. While hugs and high fives may have be curtailed due to safety guidelines, Sylvester has shown kindness in other ways, visiting COVID units, buying lunch for first responders, and more. In honor of his 20th anniversary of starting his mission, September 12 will forever be known as National Hug & High Five Day.
