Minimum Legal Drinking Age at 21: Anniversary, 1984

July 17th, 2021

Company: Mothers Against Drunk Driving

Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) helped pass the 21 Minimum Legal Drinking Age (MLDA) law because it saves lives. President Ronald Reagan signed MLDA federal legislation making it illegal for anyone under 21 to purchase or publicly possess alcohol.

This law continues to prevent tragedies — decreasing crashes by an estimated 16 percent and keeping young people safer from many risks.
