Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is a United States federal holiday marking the birthday of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It is observed on the third Monday of January each year, which is around the time of King's birthday, January 15. The holiday is a national day of service, and annually it is an opportunity to remember this remarkable civil rights leader's legacy. While people do get a day off of school or work on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, this is the only federal holiday designed to be a day of service, meaning individuals are encouraged to volunteer and improve their communities.
