The 2011 earthquake off the Pacific coast of Tōhoku is often referred to in Japan as the Great East Japan Earthquake Higashi; the 2011 Tohoku earthquake; and the 3.11 Earthquake. It was a devastating earthquake — the most powerful one ever known to hit Japan. It was also the fifth most powerful earthquake worldwide since modern record-keeping. What made the earthquake so impactful is that it also triggered a tsunami, with waves that reached heights of 133 feet (40.5 meters).
